WIND SONG

some times, I just let the wind, blow, through me
through me like my body's got no bone
weeping willow tree keep bending, in the driving rain
let the winds blow cold, come steal it all away

take my hand she said, come on down boy
it's cold outside
leave those wild horses at the door
well it's crazy, I know, I said
these thoughts inside my head
run so wild, can't hold them anymore

run so wild, can't hold them, any more

blue sky sunny days she said, when you're happy as the grass is green
are here today and gone like tomorrow's child
take it easy, she said, don't worry, the die is cast
do what you can, just make this moment last

thundlerclaps that roll and rumble
storm clouds twist and turn and tumble
whether it's wicked weather or it's fine
she said I'm yours, and you are mine, come the rain, come the sweet sunshine
in the high times, and the low times, you'll be mine
the high times and low times you'll be mine

SHORES OF SUPERIOR

here on the shores of Superior
caught between green and the blue
grey clouds fly, in a tangled sky
and I am so glad to be here with you

out on the shores of Superior
on the edge of a desolate sea
down through the door that's always open
a cold wind blows thoughtlessly

how many miles as the crow flies
did we come to be here in this place?
how many days 'til a snow-cold blanket
of silence lies over the space?

out on the shores of Superior
empty and wider than sleep
the white-crested water, laid out before us
endlessly frigid and deep

salmon they run to the spawning
shadows of clouds give chase
quick fox barks at the gates of the dusk
lark floating in space

out on the shores of Superior
to be living this wonderful life
riding the blacktop highway further
ever onwards and up to the light

NORTH WIND IN SOUTH ONTARIO

there's a wind that blows down from the northland
across horizons just as wide as wide can be
over the whistling wasteland
and the cold cold Arctic sea
the miles of trackless woodland
the rivers running down to the Bay

a beckoning siren
calling, in a song on the wind
a song of the northland
a song of the stones
a song of the wide land that dreams me

she will sing if you listen
whispers of whistling bones, white cedar, and ice
she'll sing of the shimmering surges of spectral bright light
at the top of the world
how I love the wind that blows down from north Ontario

under the milky bird-path way's ten million tiny stars
the branches dance and wave at the water side

there's a wind that blows down from the northland
'cross horizons just as wide as wide as can be
she'll sing of the wide land
the wide wide land that dreams me

GREEN AND BLACK

green and black discolored sky, the
dark of a gathering storm
to find release, I'm trying to breathe
trying to feel like this is normal
it's not normal, no
way down to my toes, I can feel it
I have touched it, seen it all
so many times before, bring it
on, the trouble I can't
refuse, bring it on, it's trouble if I win, if I
lose, it's trouble, the life that I
choo-oose

no siren warning sound alarm
the violence of silence, I'm dancing in the
dark once again, under
streetlights in the rain
only halfway sane, in pain, again, at the
end of the dream, I can feel it
I have touched it, seen it all
too many times before, bring it
on, the trouble I can't
refuse, bring it on, it's trouble if I win, if I
lose, it's trouble, the life that I
choo-oose

way down to my toes, I can feel it
I have touched it, seen it all
too many times before, bring it
on, the trouble I can't
refuse, bring it on, it's trouble if I win, if I
lose, it's trouble, the life that I
choo-oose

HOW MUCH RAIN MUST FALL

I'm tired and confused, aching breaking
can't shake it off or take you from my mind
torch the bridges, close the doors, bury dreams you shared before
cut the knots and stumble running blind

how much rain must fall before
the green grass grows on this side of the hill
how wide these tides of shifting sands, on which we stand

I walk along the beach, watch the questions rise and fall
it's all a game, you know I'll break before you bend
keep the jokers up your sleeve, keep the talk to make believe
keep me hanging on until the end

how much rain must fall before
the green grass grows on this side of the hill
how wide these tides of shifting sands, on which we stand

I'm tired and confused, aching breaking
can't shake it off or take you from my mind
torch the bridges, close the doors, bury dreams you shared before
cut the knots and stumble running blind

how much rain must fall before the
green grass grows on this side of the hill
how wide these tides of shifting sands, on which we stand

IT ALL COMES DOWN TO LOVE

it all comes down to love
all comes down to love, like a
bird in the tree, singin'
valiantly, I'll
sing in my chains like the sea, 'til I'm free, cus it
all comes down to love
it all comes down to love tell me
what were we thinking of, were we
dreaming? ... too
bad we forgot this
pale blue dot
the only home that we've got, how
things fall apart, the head and the heart
stop caring, for anyone

it all comes down to love
all comes down to love
when all of your castles have crumbled to sand, and
time's cold river just slips through your hands well it
all comes down to love
it all comes down to love
a door that you can never close, just as
sure, as the wind blows, how
can you be free, if
eyes only see
what you want them to see, the
truth may be cru-el but only a foo-el
will hold on tight to illusion

it all comes down to love
it all comes down to love
it all comes down to love
it all comes down to love

LIMEY SHORES OF HURON, THE

by the limey shores of Huron, where the sleepy white clouds sail by
missing you
on an old escarpment clifftop, where the rattlesnakes sleep all day
picturing you
these times when we're apart, weigh heavy, on my heart
in love you're either in or out, but I can't scream or call out
I can't let the demons out

in a rainforest cathedral, 3,000 miles from home
pining for you
by a cedar fire on Long Beach, where the Japanese surf rolls in
picturing you
it's a perfect Clayoquot dusk, with a beauty, that's almost too much
but still I miss you and your touch
the truth of your fingers, your fingers and your perfect touch

all the bittersweet shadows and light, I want to share with you
I want to share my life
we'll watch the seasons change together, and when now becomes forever
then I'll be by your side

by the limey shores of Huron, where the sleepy white clouds sail by
missing you
on an old escarpment clifftop, where the rattlesnakes sleep all day
picturing you
out on that lonesome highway, that road of no return
like wooden lambs into the dreaming
transformation seeming
always, only one short step away

LUCKY SONG

brilliant child, you make your world smile
love and laughter, the light that you shine
magical child at, home in the bright sun
a gold stuffy lion and a white woolly lamb
threads of the future, running through your hands
you lucky, little man

when the dark fox barks and the soft grass is green
and the yellow amber sunflakes fall like leaves from the trees

star child, heart of the new day, you're the
bean burrito, the strawberries and cream
love child oh so happy as the heart's long
song to the beauty and the harmony of things
one lucky star, you are, yes you are
a lucky star you are

you'll be nice and warm, in the storm
you'll wrapped up tight in the night
you'll be safe and snug as a bug, in a rug
and tomorrow you'll be dancing, in the rain, again

brilliant child, you make your world smile
love and laughter, the light that you shine
magical child at, home in the bright sun
a gold stuffy lion and a white woolly lamb
threads of the future, running through your hands
you lucky, little man

when the dark fox barks and the soft grass is green
and the yellow amber sunflakes fall like leaves from the trees

MAPLE LEAF MONOLOGUE

you watched the waters rise
all round your feet - did the
gas light that you burned so bright make you
blind, too blind to see
it's up to you, it's down to me
singing glorious and free

a rain of maple leaves
falls to the ground - true-blue
trolls way down in the rabbit-hole
never know what's up or down
talk to me, I'll talk to you
tell me how you know it's true?

look around, it's Paradise, from far and wide, we see thee rise
stand on guard, by my side
only we can free our minds

cold north wind blows
all through your dreams - oh so
grand your home on this native land
still you feel like a refugee
ancient creeds, like withered reeds
sad old world memories

you watched the waters rise
all round your feet - did the
gas light that you burned so bright make you
blind, too blind to see
it's up to you, it's down to me
singing glorious and free

look around, this Paradise, from far and wide, we see thee rise
stand on guard, by my side
only we can free our minds

NORTH FORK MOUNTAIN

in Smoke Hole West Virginia
on the North Fork Mountain side
the preacher's daughter and I
like moths to the flame
like salamanders thrashing
like Thomas and Lady Jane
'til the firefly angels flickered out
like candles in the rain

it's a long way down the mountain
to the hard old world below
it's a long road back to heaven
when you fall

ah...

tell me
was the world much simpler then?
or is that just in my mind?
I see smoke rise through the trees
blue eyes that say 'follow'
in the wildwood
the spring buds swell once again
in the greenwood
where once we lay

West Virginia
Smoke Hole Canyon
on the North Fork Mountain side
West Virginia
Smoke Hole Canyon
preacher's daughter and I

FALLING

I wake up and lie close beside you
watch sunbeams falling on white
silently breathing in
rapt up in musk
you rise from the deep of the night
oh my heart aches
to be touched by such grace
on the swell of an ocean tide
we fall up to the light

so many brilliant pictures born
in the moment of each caress
home from the hills to a deep deep sea
of love more than words could express
a hot summer's morning
all filled up and charmed
blue flowers dance behind my eyes
I rise in your arms

falling
falling

it seemed that I heard a voice whisper my name, she said
"you're a wave of the sea -
a wind on the water, a flood on a plain"
she said "I'll set you free"
like a child on tiptoe
turning the golden key
in power and glory we ride
let the tide carry me

ROAD TO PARADISE, THE

take away the colour, leave them black and white
teach them 50 shades of guilt, and, tell them day is night
stop the children smiling, dethrone the pagan gods
humiliate the healers, this path no saviour trod, tell

me is this the road to Paradise
is this the road, is this the road to Paradise
is this the road, to Paradise

con them from their gnosis, in hands put rusty nails
fictions of a crucial kind, and, Plain Truth through the mail
Pharisees who lost the keys, to the locks upon your gates
have forgotten that they had them once, the hour's getting late, tell

me is this the road to Paradise
is this the road, is this the road to Paradise
is this the road, to Paradise

a dragon looks through your eyes, and it always will
a million years of passion, too strong for you to kill
still you would deny her, smother up her fire
until scapegoating the innocent, is the fruit of your desire, tell

me is this the road to Paradise
is this the road, is this the road to Paradise
is this the road, to Paradise

you who gave it up for Jihad, rapture rich reward:
fourteen houris at your feet, all, hanging on your every word!
protectors at the pearly gates, keep infidels from there
so look down on this ashen earth, with eyes that shed no tears, tell

me is this the road to Paradise
is this the road, is this the road to Paradise
is this the road, to Paradise

BEAUTIFUL DAY

sunlight shakes the morning streets
birds are singing in the trees, again
it's a beautiful day

it's a beautiful day
with blue sky, to melt my cares away
such a beautiful day

new life grows everywhere
it won't be denied

thrushes singing for their new romances
blue jays flashing through the branches
and I, I feel alive

robin's back from Mexico, such a
long way to Etobicoke, saying
mother nature, wake up
let's get this show on the road

it seems like we've been sleeping
like we've been gone too long

sunlight shakes the morning streets
birds are singing in the trees, again
it's a beautiful day

SOME SWEET MORNING

see the moon on the water - shimmering stars
laid out before me - wide and so far
dark clouds may gather - the way may be steep
father and mother - got promises to keep
so long the stranger - no more to roam
over the water - on my way home

some sweet morning, leave trouble behind
down by the water, I'll ease my mind
the water's wide, and I, have no wings to fly
there's no trouble in the water, the water's wide
I'm gonna wade in the water, to the other side
the other side

take my watch and my chain
I won't be coming home again
no trouble, in the water
take me to the water, rock my soul

leaves are falling, the time has come
birds are leaving, and I must be gone
to the water side, river deep, so dark and so wide

there's no trouble in the water, the water's wide
I'm gonna wade in the water...

there is a river, runs down from the mountain
sings in it's chains, all the way down to the sea
this river is wide, and I can't cross over
but one day soon, I shall be, free

all the king's horses
and all the king's men
can't make me a young man, again

there's no trouble, in the water
take me to the water, and rock my soul

ALL THAT A BOY COULD DESIRE

there goes my lover, my soulmate and clown
the match made in heaven that burns everything down, she was
safe as the weather, tame as the tide
so soft when she lay by my side

they say that when love calls you should follow
they say follow the track even if it runs steep
let it take you to joy and to sorrow
let it take you so high, and deep

she got what she wanted, well in demand
oh so persuasive, so hard to withstand, she was
strongest in water, with a wild steak of fire
all that a boy could desire

oh you spin closer in to each other
then you turn in your strongest and tightest embrace
'til you find at the source
there's a nuclear force
pushing you back into space

now the pages turn fast in the book of my days
like snow on the garden, memories fade
but it's time to look forward, to be traveling light
my star in the east, shines bright

and yes when she calls, I will follow
I'll follow the track, even if it runs steep
let it take you to joy and to sorrow
let it take you so high, and deep
